Oval Office drama notwithstanding, the door to the White House has been opened for SA

We are right to be fixated on what transpired at the Oval Office on Wednesday during the meeting between presidents Cyril Ramaphosa and Donald Trump. It was a grotesque spectacle, with one man, Ramaphosa, behaving like an adult, and another one, well, let’s just say, it was vintage Trump, playing to his gallery with “receipts” of a white genocide. Ramaphosa tried to push back, with some in his delegation sharing their personal experiences of South Africa.

Trump pounced with old footage of some politicians singing “Kill the boer” — a song that should have no place in a democratic South Africa. There were also images of rows of crosses, which he falsely claimed were a burial site for white farmers. BBC Verify reports that those were not graves, but a temporary memorial for a white couple that was murdered in KwaZulu-Natal in 2020.

Trump then launched into a deranged handout of gory pictures, one of which was found by numerous international news agencies to be of women killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was dramatic, effective, but untrue.

It is worth noting that by and large, international mainstream media, from France to Britain, the US and Europe, have been scathing and critical of Trump, with The Guardian’s David Smith describing him as a “Bond villain startling guests with noxious gas”.

Yet, in South Africa, commentary seems to be skewed towards a perception that Ramaphosa and Team SA did “not do so well”. I am not sure how well one can do against someone who is belligerent and has home-ground advantage. And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s humiliation would have been top of Ramaphosa’s mind. He could have pushed more with a brief but firm reference on stats and data, but overall, his calm disposition demonstrated some self-mastery.

What else happened? Top on Ramaphosa’s list was to get Trump to participate in the G20 Heads of State Summit in Johannesburg in November, which South Africa chairs. The Trump administration has publicly boycotted the 2025 G20. Ramaphosa did not even have to introduce the topic. After greeting his audience, Trump said, “We have the G20 coming to South Africa…” Ramaphosa did not miss the opportunity, using flattery to remind Trump: “You originated the G20.”

Of course, it was started by the US in 1999, but for Trump, hearing the personal “you” would be a turn-on.  Ramaphosa piled on the charm, “Of course, I then hand over to you…” With a possessive tone, Trump interjected: “We have it next year…”

A little later and behind the scenes, in the Cabinet Room, it was a different universe. We are told laughter, jokes and a cordial environment prevailed. Even Elon Musk behaved like a normal human being and not a child suffering from a sugar rush. The two sides discussed a reasonable Starlink offering which does not entail South Africa subverting its transformation agenda.

The Trump team was reminded that the law constrains the government and there would be time-consuming losses should any non-compliant deal be challenged in the courts, which was almost a certainty. My source says “they understood”, and Trump reportedly encouraged everyone to “make it work”.

Musk, I am told, spoke collaboratively, but most of the dialogue was held between the two presidents, with Trump deferring to his commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick and Lutnick’s South African counterpart, Parks Tau.

Agoa

South Africa approached the talks with a pragmatic acceptance that the Agoa trade programme had been nullified by the US’s reciprocal tariffs on everyone.

“There was no begging but an offer to reset, as we are the US’s largest trading partner in Africa.” At home, threats that “South Africa will lose Agoa” must now be adapted to an acceptance that Agoa is gone, and not for the reasons that they thought it would be.

The biggest surprise for South Africa was Trump’s nonchalant attitude to the International Court of Justice case that SA brought against Israel. For months, it was understood that this was the main reason for the US’s wrath against South Africa.

However, in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said, “I don’t know … they’ve got a case … there is a lot of anger … we’ll have a ruling and who knows…” That was it. It was hardly mentioned in the Cabinet Room. South Africa’s relationships with Iran, China and Russia did not come up in the way it was feared. After his Oscar-winning Oval Office performance to his base, behind closed doors, Trump was a “jovial and perfect host”.

Three sources — two from South Africa and one from the US — told me: “Sorry. There was no drama.” Another said, “It was important that the commerce secretary be given space to interact with Tau without the political noise.” I asked another, “Were you happy?” I got a thumbs-up and some happy emojis.

Each side will now go back to thrash out the minutiae of the trade deal. For now, the door to the White House is opened. DM

This article, based on hearsay, seems like an attempt to “blackwash” the entire farce. The regency to “old” footage of the ultimate racist buffoon is completely out of synch - is six months. While there is surely no “genocide” there is a systematic eradication of elderly white people by black criminals. The gang related murders are perpetrated by gang members - it is mostly due to inept and corrupt SAPS ( should be SAP because there is NO service).

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso May 23, 2025, 07:35 AM

Well done CR and team for putting aside your individuak party interests and putting the South African country and economy first. Fixing the economy will fix our country for all of us, giving equal education and jobs for all - and surely then removing BEE and other such related laws.

Rod MacLeod May 25, 2025, 08:18 AM

Duh - let's face it, he's only had 31 years to do that. And still hasn't done it, and doesn't look even close to doing it.

peterdncn May 23, 2025, 07:42 AM

ANC and the Trump administration actually have a lot on common. Mr. Trump has loyal Billionaires and Fox news presenters to appoint to high office. Our President has loyal ANC cadres to appoint. Qualifications need only be incidental for both Presidents and also corruption is no obstacle in for both of them. Trump admittedly has been for more efficient at destroying his country than the ANC has been in destroying SA. He did manage, in a few weeks, to achieve what the ANC took 30 years to do. ANC destruction was not intended. Trump did his on purpose.

Rama Chandra May 23, 2025, 08:26 PM

You forget how close it was to leaving Zuma in power, who was every bit as Trump as Trump himself. Zuma - and his kin - still lurks in the shadows just off centre stage.

The whole world is looking in amazement at Washington, where the world's largest military and economic power is currently ruled by a man who behaves like a badly behaved child playing in a sandbox. Ramaphosa has shown the right instinct for dealing with such a childish adult. In doing so, he has earned himself and his country respect and recognition in the eyes of the world public?.

Rod MacLeod May 25, 2025, 08:22 AM

The vast majority of world news outlets barely mentioned the visit if at all, and those that did were sniggering in their handkerchiefs. Please provide references as to your source evidencing this "respect and recognition in the eyes of the world public". I don't see it.

Dietmar Horn May 26, 2025, 08:33 AM

Sources that primarily report in the lingua franca do not represent the majority of the global public. Native speakers of the lingua franca have a very comfortable communicative environment, but they are not always comprehensively and completely informed.

Johan Herholdt May 23, 2025, 07:52 AM

Yes, the door opened somewhat, but it takes only one DEI incident to slam it shut - like allowing the suspected ISIS head in SA, Farad Hoomer, to register his Islamic State of Africa party with the IEC.

This article is listed under DEFEND TRUTH?Malema/MK sing that all the time and combined achieved 24% of the votes in the last election. Ramaphosa did not act like a grown man while Trump did not. One acted like a beggar and the other one like an academic. Memorial Hill crosses each represented a grave. Fact remains two kids of different races but of the same income class have to perform very differently in Matric to access uni or the economy. Study Genocide Watch. Great "neutral" journalism.

Roy Rover May 23, 2025, 09:13 AM

What result would have satisfied your rage?

PETER BAKER May 23, 2025, 09:14 AM

Notwithstanding the Malema shit show I think the meeting went very well..body language was good (poor old el Presidente Ramaphoria did show some squirming and fidgeting...but who wouldn't under such a barrage of video affrontage to ALL South Africans). el Presidente did get a good word in here and there and looked smart! In puts from the three Afrikaners, who just so happened to be Trump chommies was a clincher. Steenhuizens words au point. The apparent success of the Cabinet Room meeting ****

PETER BAKER May 23, 2025, 09:29 AM

I pray that what is taken home from DC by the entourage is that SA must lean away from the East and to the West which has the values and cultural spirit which South Africa aspires to. We can certainly keep a foot on both sides in all aspects, but the West which aspires to freedom, the rule of law, and human rights and accountability is where we must make our home. We have an opportunity to be really the man in the middle and be friends with both sides. It was a venture to make all of us proud.

Rama Chandra May 23, 2025, 08:31 PM

Is this sarcasm? I am not sure. Trump is busy destroying all of those, while Germany and France are busy assaulting protesters and declaring persona non grata anyone who mentions the term genocide. The UK is involuntarily flying people to Rwanda and due process and habeas corpus are under threat everywhere in the West, except possibly Ireland and Scandinavia. China isn't a beacon of freedom either, and may become as bad as the US on foreign policy, but for now it would be my preferred partner,

Rod MacLeod May 25, 2025, 08:28 AM

"China isn’t a beacon of freedom either .. " Either? Are you suggesting the "West" isn't a beacon of freedom, in the same vein as China? Ever been to China, my China? Clearly not ...

Janine Scorer May 23, 2025, 09:35 AM

USA Trump administration and SA have a lot in common they both friends with Russia and China so why would Trump give SA a hard time when he is in the same boat. Personally I feel well done to the SA delegation of parlimentairians and citizens. We needed the reset.

Rod MacLeod May 25, 2025, 08:32 AM

If you think this was a reset you're delusional. Cyril was the squirming naughty kid in the headmaster's office. He had no intelligible answers to what was presented to him. And Rupert, dear fellow, telling the world there are no issues because he is building, you know, like three houses in Graaff-Reinet for his grand kids. That's a big endorsement of the country - from a multi-billionaire with his wealth stashed in the EU and the USA.

PETER BAKER May 23, 2025, 09:49 AM

Maybe....just maybe Trump saw in South Africa a potential honest broker between the "bad guys" in his eyes...Iran..Palestine...Russia...China and US of A. None of these contentious countries was brought up at least in public. This might just be an era of golf course diplomacy and here we are the champions of the world no doubt about it!! If Trump comes to G20 Gary will tee off with the Blond Shark!!

Rod MacLeod May 25, 2025, 08:34 AM

When grey old golfers emerge as your leaders, it's time to sell.

Caroline Rich May 23, 2025, 10:04 AM

I am not a supporter of the ANC, and despise Trump even more. However, I do believe that our delegation, in particular Cyril did an excellent job of diplomacy and got their point across without being drawn into the drama. The bottom line is that we need trade with America, and one has to play the game, which they did.

Rob Alexander May 23, 2025, 11:38 AM

Exactly what I wanted to say

Charles Thatcher May 23, 2025, 11:28 AM

The misconceptions held by Trump have in them a grain of truth that keep them alive and in the news: 1 Malema persists openly with his hate speech "kill the Boer" untroubled by the law. 2 The BEE laws are race-based reverse discrimination directed at white males in particular. 3. SA history, and Apartheid-era dogma empowered a large majority of white farmers, many Afrikaans-speaking. In pure numbers, the farmers were a visible and vulnerable target for criminal gangs

Rama Chandra May 23, 2025, 08:35 PM

The farmers used to be protected by rural watch schemes. These however were disbanded after a number of racist attacks on people passing through despite their admittedly strong role in protecting locals. Worse still, there was no study or thought on what to replace them with, and this absence of an effective policing strategy is the route of the problem. The asylum seekers though are not farmers, but the poor white population who will most likely be poor in the US instead.

André Pelser May 23, 2025, 11:55 AM

It is astounding that nowhere is there mention of the Concourt ruling that the "kill the boer" is not hate speech - undermining confidence in our judicial system.e The EWC bill, signed the day before Christmas, was not properly addressed, BELA not even mentioned, also the latest quota employment bill. Neither was there any comment about the reasons for the sorry state of the SA economy. All in all a very poor exhibition of intergovernmental/-state engagement. A pity Rubio was not there.

francoistheron8 May 23, 2025, 12:16 PM

Nothing can be read into Trump’s “nonchalant attitude” to the ICJ case. Trump was fixated on theatrics. Spot on, Peter Duncan. Trump and the ANC are similar. Just qualify that ANC did not intentionally destroy. They ignored consequences, prioritising looting over “transformation” which was structured to enrich comrades, caring nought for the people. If the door is slightly open, Senate Republicans intend closing it because of foreign policy divergences.

MG L May 23, 2025, 12:21 PM

Redi, the fact is that 3,000 murdered farmers represents 7.5% of the total number of farmers in South Africa. That is way more than the figure of 2.6% being civilians killed by the Israelis in Gaza that the ANC label as genocide. The government might not have ordered those deaths, but they broke SAPS which allowed those murders to take place. They must take responsibility. Oh, and fix Malema and that spiteful song before they sink our country.

megapode May 23, 2025, 12:38 PM

Can we unpack these numbers a bit? They're important. Now that 3k was not in one year. The Witkruis monument goes back to 2004. So at a worst case that is 3k murders in 20 years. 150 a year. Understand me: I am not saying that is acceptable or good. What is the size of the population in which those murders occur? Then we can start stacking that number up against the national rate, the national number of murders (an awful 27K in 2022).

Rodney Xhali May 23, 2025, 05:23 PM

That was supposed to be 'a tick' not risk.

Mortimer Lee May 23, 2025, 12:43 PM

3000 murdered farmers?? Where did you dig-up this particular piece of bulldust from??

MG L May 24, 2025, 08:38 AM

Agri SA

Steuart Pennington May 23, 2025, 12:28 PM

Maybe hope against hope, no doubt SA reputation as country and a tourist destination was tarnished by the video visuals. Hopefully Ramaphosa was unhappy, even embarrassed by this. Hopefully over the coming months he will do something about it.

Jubilee 1516 May 23, 2025, 01:39 PM

Incorrect use of a 2020 protest as a grave site has 100% same effect as the the grave sites themselves. Withholding extremely relevant, correct interracial murder stats by government is not .Witkruis Monument is a permanent memorial to farm murders where each cross represents a person murdered on a farm, each with a name that can be verified. Deliberate focus on an alleged exaggeration does not debunk the highly disproportional interracial murder situation, often by cash flush syndicates.

Jubilee 1516 May 23, 2025, 01:55 PM

I find DM's closing of the article on the ANC crime stats extremely disconcerting. How about neutral reporting, free speech, proportonality, Mchunu caught understating by 87.5% the recently?

Rodney Xhali May 23, 2025, 05:11 PM

Thumbs Up! I personally think we've got a deal. The embarrassing situation with the Ukrainian President had me worried. Our president's choice of words and comments won the day. The president's delegation also deserve a risk...

Rama Chandra May 23, 2025, 08:23 PM

There is something very strange when the party of genocide is the Democrats and the Republicans may well be the party of a lasting peace in Gaza. Far too slow, but I would drop him a peace price if he forces it through.
