DA’s Cilliers Brink is out — City of Tshwane has 14 days to elect new mayor

The ANC, EFF and ActionSA have succeeded in their mission to remove Cilliers Brink as mayor of the City of Tshwane. He was elected in March 2023.
DA’s Cilliers Brink is out — City of Tshwane has 14 days to elect new mayor

The council sitting on Thursday in the City of Tshwane saw the DA’s Cilliers Brink voted out by 120 councillors while 87 voted against the motion of no confidence against him, while one member abstained.

The ANC, EFF and ActionSA occupy 117 seats in the council and were further supported by Good, AIC and DOP.

The City has 14 days to elect a new mayor.

ActionSA had decided to ditch the DA and work with the ANC instead, citing the DA’s arrogance as one of the reasons to part ways.

In a statement following Brink’s removal ActionSA mentioned the stark difference between services provided in urban areas versus townships.

“When one looks at the differences between suburban and township communities in Tshwane, the real problem emerges. In suburban communities, 64% of respondents indicated an improvement in service delivery, while in townships this number was as low as 24%,” it said.

“In this shocking statistic lies the problem, that ActionSA found itself in a coalition at the mercy of a mayor from a party who has no discernible constituency in the townships of the city he governed.”

The DA believes it is a blow for residents of Tshwane, arguing that the ANC has no interest in good governance but instead wants to "pillage and steal" from a stabilised government.

“This will no doubt destabilise Tshwane and ActionSA is duly complicit in this power grab. The doomsday coalition has now taken over Tshwane and it will go the same road as Joburg and Ekurhuleni. A future of urban decay and service delivery failure lies ahead for the good citizens of Tshwane,” DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga said.

“Good and responsible governance has been sacrificed for a matrimony that will undoubtedly leave the people of Tshwane worse off than ever before. Under the guise of change, ActionSA has broken a coalition that was created to collaborate with integrity, and shared the goal of building a Capital City that works for all of its people.”

Musical chairs

Previous mayor Randall Williams resigned in February 2023, saying it was for the sake of the stability of the coalition government.

Then the embattled Murunwa Makwarela was voted in, but his tenure as the first citizen of Tshwane was short lived. He was at the centre of controversy after submitting a fake insolvency rehabilitation certificate in a bid to retain the mayorship after being backed by the ANC and EFF for the position.

He resigned and was then booted out by his party, Cope, while being heavily condemned by all political parties, even those that had backed him. DM

This was a foregone conclusion, it has absolutely nothing to do with the buzzwords of "service delivery" nor politics or any other feeble excuse they can dream up. This is purely racial, a young white man putting the rest to shame, and that is a severly bitter pill to swallow.

laurantsystems Sep 26, 2024, 04:45 PM

Your last sentence is correct, but expect the usual woke suspects on this page to go into a full-on hissy meltdown because you dared to tell the truth.

Leon Schreiber is making positive waves in Home Affairs after the disastrous tenure of Motsoaledi. I wonder how long before he is demoted or reassigned according to Cyril's master plan.

hlavatican Sep 26, 2024, 06:24 PM

His biggest mistake was to close the financial tap that was feeding the revolutionary sharks. Now black like me wants a piece of the pie to prop up his hair products business as his political career enters the sunset days. Cry my beloved city

ttshililo2 Sep 26, 2024, 07:11 PM

I couldn’t help chuckle at your last sentence and the first thought was: “ white men will be successful in life and still develop a raging victim complex”. Never were words truer in the context of South Africa. Cilliers and the DA have sunk Tshwane to depths unknown even for Gauteng.

Gavin, I couldn’t help but chuckle at your last sentence and my first thought was: “ white men will be successful in life and still develop a raging victim complex”. Never were words truer in the context of South Africa. Cilliers and the DA have sunk Tshwane to depths unknown even for Gauteng.

Grumpy Old Man Sep 27, 2024, 07:51 AM

If we look at issues through a racial lens - our problems will always be racial The real problems we face are 'financial' - the fact that Gauteng is Bankrupt and that unless we confront this reality everyone suffers - more particularly the poor. That's the bottom line here

William Dryden Sep 27, 2024, 09:32 AM

Obviously you are an ardent ANC supporter who hates the DA because they know how to run a city, now watch it implode under the ANC thanks to Herman Mashaba the new political prostitute on the block.

megapode Sep 27, 2024, 08:59 AM

I think the real driver here is Mashaba's lust for vengance for some actual or perceived slight. Also ASA got very little support this year, and will anticipate the same in the next LGE. So Mashaba is trying to do what he can whilst he still has seats and thus influence at LGE level.

dorringtonw Sep 27, 2024, 10:55 AM

Quite right.

Pieter van de Venter Sep 27, 2024, 11:06 AM

Spot on - Cilliers is white and therefore the enemy. Brazen and naked racism. The EFF actually race baited him. Wait for the AG report next year about the 2024/25 audit. One light in the tunnel, I guess Eskom pressure to get payment from Tshwane will go away.

Anil Maharaj Sep 26, 2024, 04:29 PM

All right folks. Sit back and watch the ANC show you how a city should be managed

Ifitwalkslikeaduck P Sep 26, 2024, 04:57 PM

....damn story we have seen all too often before. Durban...broken, Johannesburg...broken, Ekuruleni...broken, Bufallo City...broken, NMB...broken, every small town ruled by the ANC...broken. Mashaba is known to be arrogant himself and he has thrown Tshwane to the dogs...unbelievable folly.

phophi Sep 27, 2024, 08:06 AM

How could you forget the notorious Emfuleni and Ditsobotla? Mashaba is now an ANC useful idiot just like the erstwhile Joburg mayor Gwamanda.

laurantsystems Sep 26, 2024, 04:42 PM

26 September 2024. The day Action SA, ASA, committed political suicide. It is already a nothing party - more or less the same size as the FF+ nationally - and in 2026 it will be decimated and destroyed by disillusioned voters. Mashaba's infantile delusions of grandeur has seen to that.

Walter Spatula Sep 26, 2024, 05:21 PM

Indeed. ActionSA's future was shaky, but now they're done.

in Sep 26, 2024, 05:46 PM

The ASA asses (as in donkeys) are indeed cooked. But not before the odious Mashaba threw Pretoria's ratepayers to the ANC wolves. By 2027, Mashaba's Asses will be a distant memory, only serving as a grim reminder of why one should not vote for minnow parties like the Asses, Rise Mzansi and others.

phophi Sep 27, 2024, 08:12 AM

Absolutely. Ms Zille warned us minnow parties but many didn't listen. Now Mashaba is the darling of ANC.

megapode Sep 27, 2024, 09:10 AM

Zille should talk! The then DP polled under 2% in 1994. They were minnows! Should we have ditched them then? They polled under 10% in 1999. All parties have to start somewhere, just like the DA did. They are playing scare tactics because they know how a party can grow from a small start.

louw.nic Sep 26, 2024, 04:51 PM

The previous chap the ANC put in charge of Pretoria's ZAR50,000,000,000 budget was an unrehabilitated insolvent...let that sink in. The ANC also put Kabelo Gwamanda in charge of the City of Joburg - he has a Grade 10 education.

Grumpy Old Man Sep 26, 2024, 05:08 PM

It's the 15th of April 1912. We are 3rd class passengers on a ship travelling from Southampton to New York. A voice comes over the intercom. This is your Captain, Panyaza Lesufi, speaking. I want to welcome you all onboard. Your in safe hands with me and the fine crew of the good ship Titanic!

in Sep 26, 2024, 05:43 PM

Lesufi has made his play for the leadership of the ANC in 2027 and today was a major victory for his faction. The GNU is not between the ANC and the DA, that much is clear. It is between the Ramasofa faction of the ANC and the DA. Lesufi today showed us that Ramasofa is toast, come 2027.

hlavatican Sep 26, 2024, 06:30 PM

True but it makes me very afraid. The only solution is a clear victory in all 3 metros to destroy his ambition. No votes for briefcase parties please in 2026.

Grumpy Old Man Sep 26, 2024, 06:48 PM

Don't think so! Outside of Gauteng, Lesufi ain't a player - but he has the support of Paul Mashatile. Mashatile is the Heir apparent - not Panyaza

Skinyela Sep 27, 2024, 07:44 AM

"Ramasofa is toast, come 2027." He is not running in 2027,so he can't be toast in a race to which he is not participating.

Johnny Bravo Sep 26, 2024, 05:34 PM

Mayor Cilliers, keep fighting. We'll have you back in 2 years. These criminals are gonna go down swinging and they will land a punch or two. Stay strong bud.

in Sep 26, 2024, 05:54 PM

The big take-away from this fiasco: do not ever again waste your vote on one-man-and-his-dog little parties like ASA, Rise Mzansi, Bosa, Good, the ACDP, etc. Don't think that having a leader of the right hue is all that is required. All these rats-and-mice parties' principles are for sale.

Garth Kruger Sep 26, 2024, 06:28 PM

100% Agree with you Matt.

John Green Sep 26, 2024, 08:28 PM

I think- and I liked him, Herman Mashaba is a Turncoat! He is now off my list! I think Herman Mashaba and his party are Turncoats

Martin Neethling Sep 27, 2024, 07:01 AM

Fully agree. These Metros need a stronger power block to maintain any sort of recovery momentum - the last Auditor General’s report listed Tswane as most improved. Which will now be reversed. ASA, BOSA, Rise, Good - why anyone thinks these are solutions remains a mystery.

andrew.farrer Sep 27, 2024, 09:32 AM

Our election system needs to change. If you cant win a single ward seat, then you don't deserve any seats on the council. Introduce rank choice voting

Skinyela Sep 27, 2024, 11:47 AM

Worse part is that you don't necessarily need a 50%+ support to win a ward, they use 1st-pass-the-post system... No run-off.

Noelsoyizwap Sep 26, 2024, 09:05 PM

The GNU crafter, never had time to think things right through to GPU and GLU. One wonders why that. Could it be that each of them wanted to protect their absolute territories at the expense of national unity.

Noelsoyizwap Sep 26, 2024, 09:09 PM

His is DA's mess to clean up. I'm interested to hear what their come back plan in Tshwane would be. Instead of the overt rhetoric and covert sectarianism we hear all the time, a good all-inclusive strategy is now called.

Mark Benson Sep 27, 2024, 07:39 AM

I wonder how big of a role the cancellation of the garbage collection contracts and water truck mafia were in ensuring the ANC couldn't form a GLU or stability pact in Tshwane. If the first move of the new government is to reinstate these, then it will be pretty clear..

andrew.farrer Sep 27, 2024, 09:34 AM

Bingo!!

Karl Sittlinger Sep 27, 2024, 10:01 AM

Hear hear!

Rodshep Sep 27, 2024, 09:19 AM

Gavin Knox hit the nail on the head. Our erstwhile president can't control his own party and has stated, we need big business to come on board. Need white monopoly monies to fix what they have broken. Mashaba is going to deliver big time to the MK. Watch this space.

Gerrie Pretorius Sep 27, 2024, 12:33 PM

This is a typical panyasa lesufi (The eternal racist) move. He is ignoring ramaphosa, because ramaphosa has no backbone. He does not accept whites as part of this country. (And white Afrikaans males are his primary target). He wants to be the next anc president, and being a racist is the only way.

Jabu Mhlanga Sep 27, 2024, 12:47 PM

Politicians careless about progress made for the people, so long as it doesn't benefitting them.

peddledavid7 Sep 27, 2024, 02:36 PM

Well, more than one party can play the No confidence game! Let the musical games game begin again!

Roger Sheppard Sep 27, 2024, 02:53 PM

Tumelo Tumelo just HAS to have tongue-in-cheek - or else it's a pretty disgusting comment he has written! Cilliwers Brink has left at least some filthy lucre for the ActionSA et al cohort to loot! Mashaba will never again count in this writer's opinions!

Vince Owen Sep 29, 2024, 12:21 PM

Unfortunately, the politics in this country will always be colour tinted. We are a long way off from "the right man for the job". The ANC leadership cannot and will not allow a DA person, especially if they are white, to fix the mess they have created.
