Daily Maverick — Branko Brkic to step down as editor-in-chief, deputy editor Jillian Green to take up the mantle

After 15 years at the helm, and 40 years in publishing, Branko Brkic has decided to call it a day and hand South Africa’s premier editorship to his long-term deputy, Jillian Green.
Daily Maverick — Branko Brkic to step down as editor-in-chief, deputy editor Jillian Green to take up the mantle

In a long-expected move, the reins of Daily Maverick’s editorial team will soon have new guiding hands. While Branko is relinquishing his day-to-day duties, he will still remain involved in other aspects of Daily Maverick media company.

Says Branko:

“It’s been an honour and privilege of my lifetime to serve the people of South Africa. The Daily Maverick journey was from the first, and it will be to the last day, a period that has truly defined me. After 15 years, it’s time for me to try other things in life, perhaps life itself too. Jillian and I worked together every day for the last seven years and I am convinced she will be the great next guardian of Daily Maverick’s incomparable legacy.”

Says Jillian:

“Branko, thank you for your guidance and inspiration – both as a mentor and a friend. I am humbled by the faith shown in me and excited by the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation laid by a true maverick of journalism. Your leadership and vision have shaped Daily Maverick into a beacon of independent and inspirational journalism in our country. We will guard this legacy jealously even as we take Daily Maverick forward, championing muckraking journalism that not only informs but serves and empowers our readers to engage critically with the issues that affect their lives. And above all we will always defend truth and remind ourselves every day that responding to this calling means our days are meant to be ‘never boring’.

“I look forward to continuing our work with the phenomenal people who make up Daily Maverick.”

Jillian began her career as a cub reporter for The Natal Witness and over the more than two decades since has held significant roles in various publications – including Independent Newspapers and Avusa – where she has honed her skills in news editing, team management and investigative journalism.

In March 2017, Jillian joined Daily Maverick as managing editor. In this role, she was instrumental in establishing editorial systems and processes, overseeing news editing and production, and managing a diverse team of journalists. Currently, as the deputy editor-in-chief at Daily Maverick since March 2022, Jillian has taken on expanded responsibilities both on the editorial floor and in the broader business.

Daily Maverick’s transformation from a startup (incorporated on 1 September 2009, it went live on 30 October that year, with a staff of six) into a current global media leader was nothing short of remarkable, especially considering the tougher conditions African publishers endure relative to other markets.

The perennially cash-strapped outfit defied these challenges and kept growing into a modern news media company, comprising:

  • Daily Maverick website (reached 14.5 million unique visitors in June 2024, and more than one million registered users);

  • DM168 weekly newspaper;

  • 30 newsletters with 700,000 subscribers;

  • Near-weekly webinars;

  • The Gathering, South Africa’s premier conference attracting 1,500 visitors;

  • Feature film and short documentaries;

  • A book-publishing division;

  • South Africa’s premier investigative journalism team;

  • The biggest climate desk in southern Africa;

  • A growing multimedia division;

  • A multigenerational editorial team of experts and new blood;

  • An army of external contributors…

  • … and so much more.

Daily Maverick is free to all readers, which is made possible by contributions through its voluntary membership programme, Maverick Insider.

Branko started his career as a book publisher in his native Yugoslavia. In South Africa, he was a launch editor of Timbila (SANParks’ magazine), and launched ITWeb’s Brainstorm, Maverick and Empire magazines, before founding Daily Maverick in 2009. DM

Outstanding work Branko, you and the team are one of the reasons SA is still one piece and kicking! I wish you everything of the best in your future journey and look forward to the continued excellence of DM under Jill.

Max Köhler Aug 30, 2024, 12:54 PM

Agree 100%, huge appreciation!

BillyBumhe Aug 29, 2024, 12:37 PM

I respect some of TDM's investigative work, but the quality of the opionistas leaves much to be desired and it no longer offers a counter to the far-left narrative perpetuated by the rest of the media. I wish the team well, but it is sad that it has devolved into an M&G Thought Leader-style platform

alastairmgf Aug 29, 2024, 10:08 PM

I agree 100% with this comment. Although I admire your investigative work, I maintain that DM has drifted too far to the left. Your support of the oppressive Covid measures was particularly distressing to me as are many of your anti Israel articles. I will however continue to read the DM.

Alan Taurog Aug 30, 2024, 03:29 PM

I totally agree and while refusing to post responses to anti Israel articles DM is quite happy to continue posting suc inflammatory articles without giving the right to reply using various excuses.

User Aug 30, 2024, 06:32 AM

Totally agree on the drift into a M&G thought-leader style platform, however I question the phrase 'far left'. It is rather the unthinking, unquestioning slavish dominant ideology arena bolstered by a conveyor-belt of cub-reporters and 'commentators' who slide so easily into 'anything but the west'

ALAN PATERSON Aug 30, 2024, 08:42 AM

Also agree, If we are not "far left" we must automatically be "far right" according to the jargon of the day? Whatever that means. But we subscribe as free thinkers and can only commend Branko Brkic for his unique contribution to press freedom in South Africa.

Martin Neethling Aug 30, 2024, 06:57 AM

The DM has been an exceptional beacon of hard truth-telling, and for this my Insider contribution has been worth every cent. Dankie Branko. But the drift into more conventional left-of-centre narratives has been clear, and disappointing. Uncritical MSM stories are often parroted without reflection.

D'Esprit Dan Aug 30, 2024, 10:48 AM

I don't think you really understand what 'far left' is: I don't see any DM writers, Opinionistas or otherwise agitating for the overthrow of the state and the imposition of a Marxist-Leninist state and the shutting down of the media. That's kinda what far left is.

Middle aged Mike Aug 30, 2024, 11:00 AM

The incidence of the term 'far right' in DM articles, the contexts within which it's used and the people so labelled would tend to suggest that the authors don't really understand what it means either. If you call someone 'far right' because they want illegal immigration stopped, state resources prioritised for citizens and an end to xy chromosome athletes bliksemming women then those advocating the opposite are far left by their own definition.

D'Esprit Dan Aug 30, 2024, 01:15 PM

Wanting to control illegal immigration or use state resources properly is in itself not rightwing. It's how it's done that distinguishes between sensible concern and rabid dog-whistling. An example of a rabid dog-whistler is Roman whatshisface in Steenhuisen's office.

steven sidley sidley Aug 29, 2024, 01:29 PM

One of the great heroes of SA media. Take a bow. You will be missed.

D'Esprit Dan Aug 30, 2024, 11:03 AM

Spot on!

David Hill Aug 29, 2024, 01:41 PM

Congratulations are due to the outgoing and incoming EIC. Thanks for remaining faithful to your goals. First activity of every day is to check DM to find out what's REALLY going on in SA and other parts of the World. Im sure we'll still see touches of Branko around! Go well.

Alley Cat Aug 29, 2024, 02:27 PM

All the best Branco and good luck Jillian! Big shoes to fill. Just a perennial gripe, you have forgotten the people of Gauteng! You only hold gatherings in Cape Town now, but I am sure that purely by virtue of numbers, we are the biggest contributors to DM? PLEASE include us for future gatherings??

Rae Earl Aug 29, 2024, 02:46 PM

Welcome to the driving seat Jillian. Fare well Branko and enjoy whatever it is you'll be doing. DM should note the comment of John Lewis below and take care not to lose sight of reality. Investigative journalism is now massively important in SA. It is doing the work of SAPS, the SIU, the NPA etc.

John Montgomery Aug 29, 2024, 03:03 PM

A force for good - and a force of nature. Branko, South Africa owes you a debt of gratitude.

David Bristow Aug 29, 2024, 04:11 PM

We love you DM, onwards and upwards (an insider).

Ed Rybicki Aug 29, 2024, 04:44 PM

Branko, you leave a superb legacy - and I speak as a former long-time fan of the WM&G (hey, I even have their 10th anniversary rugby shirt - issued in 1995!!), which I abandoned when it became essentially unreadable. DM - I now have the T-shirt AND the cap, and it is my daily read. Thanks!!

MaverickMe Aug 29, 2024, 05:23 PM

Go well Branko! While many are going to miss you at the helm of DM I am sure that there are many (wannabe orange overalls brigade) that are relieved to see the back of you. Fortunately DM, under the new leadership of Jillian, will ensure that there are no holy cows when it comes to honest reporting.

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Aug 29, 2024, 05:25 PM

Thank you Branko, for your tremendous contribution and your profoundly elegant penmanship. You will be missed. Good luck Jill, those are some big shoes you're stepping into :)

William Kelly Aug 29, 2024, 06:17 PM

I do not think it is easy to overstate the contribution that the DM has made under BB's leadership and vision. As a country regaled with the stories that unfolded, the tales of pain, sacrifice, the tragic and the joy in stories celebrating true humanity, we have a debt beyond the ability to repay.

Rob Aug 29, 2024, 06:25 PM

Enjoy life Branko. Don’t run out of runway before you start embracing the rewards you have worked for!! Jill, take flight and soar ! Totally enjoy all that DM has to offer x

Easy Does It Aug 29, 2024, 07:48 PM

Not many remember to bow out when you are still on top. I remember the 256 page almost magazine style DM some years ago and today it stands tall with the best around the world. Go well BB and welcome GJ. You don't need luck, you are smart.

Arnold O Managra Aug 29, 2024, 10:34 PM

Goodbye Branko. I hope you find rest in your soul. Thank-you for fighting for so long for the truth. I will see you one day on an unlikely mountain. Hopefully. Keep your purse full and your mind clear. Your friend, Rolando

Jon Quirk Aug 30, 2024, 03:10 AM

Well done, my friend. You have set the standard for independent, well-researched, investigative journalism in South Africa, recognising, from the first that this is the most sacred ingredient in any functioning democracy. SA has a country has faltered, but you and your team have remained steadfast.

User Aug 30, 2024, 06:27 AM

Branko, you are up there with Anton Harber, Donald Woods, Gavin Stewart and others of that ilk. Thanks.

Derek Jones Aug 30, 2024, 07:18 AM

Thanks for a huge contribution to saving South Africa Branko. What a life you have had! A memoirs book and or a final insight would be very welcome.

Justin Vickers Aug 30, 2024, 08:09 AM

You're a bloody legend and hero in SA Branko! Thank you. Enjoy the chill.

Syd Boston Aug 30, 2024, 08:33 AM

Hvala Branko! Enjoy your next venture - good luck and God speed!

Syd Boston Aug 30, 2024, 08:33 AM

Hvala Branko! Enjoy your next venture - good luck and God speed!

endorest Aug 30, 2024, 09:09 AM

speaking more in general , I think that the concept itself of "chorus" of praises is silly, childish. Come on Guys, human life is serious , we must be humble , serious and critical. I thank the former editor because of his work from which I took advantage, but no ovations please!

Middle aged Mike Aug 30, 2024, 09:42 AM

Absent the DMs top flight and relentless investigative journalism under Brankos leadership I think SA would have been a hell of a lot further down the drain. For that I think him and wish the new editor all the best in continuing the legacy. I'd love it if the opinion pieces weren't quite so much of a hard left, woke one way street though. They're starting to feel a bit NewSpeaky.

Beverley Roos-Muller Aug 30, 2024, 11:10 AM

Thanks for getting on the bus, Branko, and for driving it for so long...we readers (and writers) would have been so much information-poorer without you. As for those wonderfully delusional comments about the hard left opinions, I don't recall one; hope I didn't miss it!

D'Esprit Dan Aug 30, 2024, 10:43 AM

Thanks Branko, you and your team have done a magnificent job over the years to speak truth to power and bring to book those who would otherwise have plundered this country with impunity. It's a pity our law enforcement don't have the same dedication and tenacity!

D'Esprit Dan Aug 30, 2024, 01:20 PM

Quick question, Jillian, as you take over the reins - is it possible to put a 'Like' function into the comments? There are so many comments that I'd like to give a simple thumbs-up to, without having to write an actual comment. Surely it's not too tricky?

alastairmgf Aug 30, 2024, 06:21 PM

There used to be a like or dislike function and it was removed. I don’t think the editors took kindly to all the dislikes which followed lefty woke articles.

BadVlad Putinhere Aug 30, 2024, 02:13 PM

One of the great one's in the South African media history. I salute you! And I will miss your articles and opinion. Sorry to see you go, and all the best with your future!

Pierre Mare Aug 30, 2024, 02:51 PM

well done sir! we'd still be in the dark ages without your initiative called The Daily Maverick

Yvonne Johnston Johnston Aug 30, 2024, 05:07 PM

From our 1st meeting, when DM was just a dream,every interaction I have had with you has left me feeling inspired, a little stupid(maybe a lot stupid actually) and grateful that our paths crossed. One of the most courageous, most forward looking and insightful people I have ever met. Go well friend.

Michael Britton Aug 30, 2024, 06:16 PM

Thank you, Branko, for what has been (and still is) a breathe of fresh air in South Africa's tired media environment. Wherever you go, don't forget to take your towel.

A P Aug 31, 2024, 07:44 AM

The only reason you survived is the sheer tenacity and passion with which you told the truth. When I looked at your site in 2009, I was grateful for a new source of high-quality insight and opinion, but I can’t deny that my first thought was, “These guys are never going to survive.” Not only did you survive, you grew, and you are probably the only freely accessible source of high-quality insight and opinion in the country. Where the big guys now hide behind paywalls, and the free news feels like a GPT with a tweak to its algorithm to make it misspell stuff. To the people who claim the DM is Left Leaning. You’re welcome to stay here because getting your news on Social Media will only make you worse.

Martin Neethling Aug 31, 2024, 08:46 AM

AP, I see you’re not yet restricted to the 300 character count that some other folk are. I for one am curious about why this is, aren’t you?

Sydney Kaye Aug 31, 2024, 08:01 AM

Since when is the editor the story. The self congratulatory time is misplaced.

shebear_m Aug 31, 2024, 10:18 AM

Thank you for your stewardship of DM these past years. DM's commitment to truth and justice is what has kept me an Insider. All the best JG and keep hitting hard.

Sue Grant-Marshall Sep 1, 2024, 10:23 PM

I’m so sad that Branko is stepping down as DM’s Editor in Chief. I worked with him, back in the day, in print, & listened to him, over many a coffee, enthusiastically describing his vision for DM. Back then many laughed at his concept. Little did they know….! Carry on you brave & brilliant man.

District Six Sep 2, 2024, 11:17 AM

Onwards and upwards, DM. Thank you sincerely, Branko.

ry Sep 4, 2024, 05:38 PM

I also feel the Maverick is moving too far left and loosing its journalistic integrity. Papers should be strictly neutral, journalists opinions shouldnt influence the story. Some Maveric journos are guided by their personal feelings, and hold some to account more than others.
