Gauteng education department ‘disappointed’ as 12 Pretoria High School for Girls learners cleared

A probe into allegations of racism at the prestigious Pretoria High School for Girls has found in favour of 12 pupils who were initially suspended for statements made in a “whites-only” WhatsApp group that had racial connotations and displayed microaggressions .

The Gauteng department of education has expressed disappointment at the outcome of a disciplinary hearing at Pretoria High School for Girls which reportedly found that 12 of 13 pupils suspended in connection with allegations of racism have been found not guilty of misconduct.

Several black pupils who spoke to Daily Maverick on condition of anonymity due to fear of victimisation said they had seen leaked messages from the “whites-only” group suggesting that they wanted “special treatment”, are allowed to get away with things, including “having afros and dying hair” and that they should “get over apartheid” or South Africa would never move forward.

The decision to absolve the pupils comes just three days after Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the school and told journalists that his department needed to set a precedent following the incident.

“I can’t shy away from the fact that racism is a problem and racism is up there with some of the worst forms of crimes that can happen…”

Parents also called for a harsh punishment for the girls involved.

The school was historically attended by whites only, but began admitting black children after the end of apartheid in 1994. At least two other racial incidents have rocked the school. In 2016, it made international headlines when  pupils staged a protest against a long-standing rule, which saw them having to chemically straighten their hair because afro hairstyles were considered untidy.

At the time of the 2016 incident, former education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said he wanted to arrest the situation before it got out of hand. Now, eight years later, the school finds itself in the same situation.

Outside the school was a hive of activity as political activists protested, some calling for the closure of the school, some for harsher sanctions for the suspended pupils and some for the axing of the principal, Phillipa Erasmus.

Hours later Chiloane said the department had taken a decision to put Erasmus on a three-month precautionary suspension.

Chiloane said preliminary investigations into claims of racism at the school revealed that the principal failed to act after being informed in 2023 of an alleged whites-only WhatsApp group where apparent racist messages were circulated.

Another racist incident recently took place in Western Cape’s Pinelands High School, where a group of Grade 8 pupils were suspended following a video that had gone viral on social media titled “slavery at schools is crazy”, and shows black students in a cage while their coloured peers bid for them.

In the video, some pupils are seen “bidding” R100,000, which they would pay using Bitcoin. The video has since sparked outrage.

Good on these young black women for standing up to racism, however subtle, and not turning the cheek- those days are over.

Harold Porter Aug 2, 2024, 11:16 PM

When you say "standing up to racism" you mean saying that 'white people must bow down and feel my wrath'...

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 07:14 AM

You sound disappointed that the white girls were found not to be racist. I sometimes think black people look with glee to find any opportunity to bitch and moan about a racial incident. So much so they are bitterly dissappointed when its found not to be the case.

Paddy Ross Aug 4, 2024, 11:55 AM

Victimhood - Bob Marley gave the answer: "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can for our minds."

Paddy Ross Aug 4, 2024, 11:57 AM

Sorry! "..... can free our minds" - Predctive spelling!

Tim Bester Aug 3, 2024, 08:49 AM

It is high time that those who claim to be black and therefore, also victims, to shed their race based inferiority complex.

Klaus Muller Aug 5, 2024, 05:47 AM

We live in a competitive society where results count, and certain people seem to have problems with this, therefore any excuse will provide a handy excuse for non-delivery, the silent majority is aware of this.

J vN Aug 3, 2024, 11:13 AM

The young black women were the perpetrators of the racism here. I hope the parents of their victims - the white girls - sue the black racists.

bigbad jon Aug 3, 2024, 11:16 AM

Hope they're enjoying the egg on their faces (both cheeks) now that their accusations was all shown to be fake..

Johan Buys Aug 3, 2024, 06:23 PM

Tumelo, when will we get over race? Not when two young circa 2006 dob ladies go through same school and one needs 50 points for Med School vs the other (based ONLY on race not ANY economic disadvantage) needs 80. Yes, hair and stupid stuff are entirely stupid. (Focus on real issues rather)

ttshililo2 Aug 3, 2024, 10:42 PM

You are ignoring certain facts: The past does STILL affect the ways in which different races experience life in this country. Begin with refraining from lying to white kids about the dehumanising of black people- colonialism & apartheid was not a bloody ‘jol’! The cowardice & fragility must stop.

Karl Sittlinger Aug 4, 2024, 09:10 AM

I don't think anybody is disputing that apartheid still had a large impact on thos country, but that doesn't mean that complaining about AA or belonging to a whatsapp group is racist. There sometimes is a witch hunt like feel to what is happening these days, and it's silencing debate.

Con Tester Aug 4, 2024, 09:11 AM

Yes, and that at *any* cost, even carefully confected outrage, prompted by a disingenuously manufactured narrative, the sole aim of which is to disrupt and destroy lives for the sake of political conceits. Your moral compass is broken.

Johan Buys Aug 4, 2024, 10:35 AM

Tumelo: thanks for response. I am unclear WHAT must happen and by when you believe we can be a normal society instead of one where blacks AND non-blacks are so obsessed by race. We will be normal when A, B, C…. Or do you think we will never be normal, or that no country is normal?

Nonech Aug 4, 2024, 02:14 PM

What is normal?

Nonech Aug 4, 2024, 02:34 PM

What does severely punished mean? Public hanging, beating, mass ostracism, expulsion, what?

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:14 AM

Nope, what's clear is that black racism is on steroids. And we will make this issue an international issue and do to racist blacks what was done to aprtheid.

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:23 AM

So what Tumelo, that doesn't give you black racists to stage fake hate crimes and falsely accuse others of racism. We are tired of you black racists.

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:24 AM

Tumelo, falsely accusing white girls of racism is the epitomy of cowardess that we have seen with black racists.

Gareth Murray Aug 4, 2024, 10:13 AM

Hope you are just as outraged at the EFF member in Pretoria who stated in council that he would love to moer boers. Wanting the blood of an Afrikaner to be precise. Here's a clear example of an intent to cause harm & injure another person because of their race.

Les Smith Aug 4, 2024, 10:30 AM

This was a witch hunt by the department. Why is it whenever there is a hint of something the African community does not agree with the favourite go to race card gets played. Who really is racist, who really always vents it. It is time to get over this. Stop being fooled by someone’s hidden agenda.

Gretha Erasmus Aug 2, 2024, 07:13 PM

Reading this article you wouldn't say that the 12 girls were found not guilty. It seems that this writer still thinks that further trial by media is deserved. As if the trauma to the 12 girls by the DoE asking the whole school if they must be suspended and the media crucifixion was not enough .

Richard Blake Aug 2, 2024, 11:39 PM

Their is no excuse for bad behaviour.

Pieter van de Venter Aug 3, 2024, 03:33 AM

And ehat behaviour are you referring to?

Cachunk Aug 3, 2024, 04:38 AM

Which is why the useless ‘education department’ should be held accountable for their scandalous, bullying treatment of these innocent young girls!

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 07:15 AM

Except if it was invented, sensationalized by the media, and never actually happened.

J vN Aug 3, 2024, 11:14 AM

Yes, the behaviour of the black girls who flung false and racist allegations, can in no way be excused.

Gretha Erasmus Aug 2, 2024, 07:18 PM

The poor principal dealt with the microagressions nearly a year ago by talking to the girls and educating them. There was no indication in any reports that it continued after that talk. She couldn't suspend them because there was no proper cause, as there wasn't now. Education not denigration needed

J W Aug 3, 2024, 04:23 AM

Also "micro aggressions" are not real, they exist purely in the head of people with victim mentality.

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 07:17 AM

Spot on, and those with victim mentality, are always on the prowl trying to perceive a racist element in everything they hear or see. Also race baiting.

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:31 AM

Micro aggressions is a black racist invention to falsely accuse whites of racism when there simply was no racism

Katryn dK Aug 3, 2024, 08:26 AM

Principal was suspended because she did not act - according to previous reporting, yet from this comment it seems that she did act? Did GDE did not like the way she acted? Or did they suspended without proper investigation? What is the truth?

J vN Aug 3, 2024, 11:15 AM

The headmistress and the true victims, the white girls who were falsely accused of non-existent racism, should sue the GED and the black racism screamers for millions.

Middle aged Mike Aug 4, 2024, 07:38 PM

That would be a worthy cause for crowd funding or pro bono offers. Using the power of the state to beat down on kids is shamefully pitiful, especially when its a state that has brought us abysmal standards of education, the systematic rape of girls by teachers and the serial drowning of kids in pit toilets.

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:32 AM

The head mistress and the students must lay charges against those racist black students and the department of education and sue them. We are sick and tired of black racists

andretait156 Aug 2, 2024, 07:54 PM

It seems to me these 12 girls are the victims of racism.

Kuna Mathata Aug 2, 2024, 09:15 PM

Agree - it was all girl talk. The question is if there were 13 of them in the whatsapp group, why then is there a separate hearing for the 13th girl, who happens to be black?

Harold Porter Aug 2, 2024, 11:18 PM

There were 12 in the group...the 13th is having a hearing for a separate incident for a video wherein she said white girls must bow down to her and feel her wrath

Karl Sittlinger Aug 3, 2024, 06:57 AM

Did you see the video Kuna?

andretait156 Aug 2, 2024, 07:57 PM

Im just glad no one gets upset about those teachers that get young girls drunk at school and rape them and then force them to have abortions. This is way worse. Also worse than the almost 400 children that have been shot in the WC so far this year. Im glad the media is focusing on this.

Gretha Erasmus Aug 2, 2024, 08:44 PM

Well said. And from Eastern Cape initiation school stats for only this past winter the 14 boys who died and the 3 permanently maimed boys and the 113 hospitalised. Where is the outrage? 14 kids dead! By adults who were paid by parents to look after their kids in the initiation schools.

Kid Charlemagne Aug 2, 2024, 11:30 PM

Where does the "whites-only" come from? Is that the name of the WhatsApp group? Going by some of the WhatsApp contents and ages of these kids, some racial understanding, tolerance and sensitivity coaching may be helpful.

Pieter van de Venter Aug 3, 2024, 03:37 AM

Surely the 13% of the pupils have the right to pick who they want to talk to? Particularly seen that they are the minority and probably need support in a very hostile environment.

Kid Charlemagne Aug 3, 2024, 05:18 PM

They are not the minority in the PG context. They can absolutely choose who to talk to, but because it's a lawful decision doesn't mean it should be an awful decision.

robynheathfiel Aug 3, 2024, 02:11 AM

Let's discuss the Black Business Council, Black Lawyers Assoc, and other exclusively black organisations, and imagine a White Business Council etc.? All the outrage and diversity training courses will not remove freedom of association, largely dictated by culture and language.

Nick Griffon Aug 3, 2024, 07:35 AM

Been saying that for years.

Donald Knight Aug 4, 2024, 11:24 AM

Indeed!

Gerrie Pretorius Aug 3, 2024, 10:26 AM

Been asking about this for years. Seems any ‘black only’ is okay?

ttshililo2 Aug 3, 2024, 11:02 PM

When were white people barred from certain professions and economic opportunities? These organisation you hv named were formed as a result of organised disrespect and racism. Why do you choose to be so ignorant, you know very well the filth dished out to black people here. Stop this!

Pieter van de Venter Aug 3, 2024, 05:28 AM

Wonder who are all EFF or MK members - jounalist, officials from the Education Department and of course, Mabona. There was an ourcome from the enquiry. Now attack the outcome because it is not what was expected? I belong to a whats app group from my neiberhood. Am I racist?

Just another Comment Aug 3, 2024, 07:01 AM

And let's not forget the author of this lynch mob article, Nonkululeko Njilo.

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 08:01 AM

Its less about what they expected and more about what they wanted. They wanted an opportunity to be victims and cry foul, much like the author of this piece. Talk about biased and sensationalist reporting. Reporting with perhaps a personal agenda. Looks like. Rather disappointing from DM.

jcscholtz123 Aug 3, 2024, 06:03 AM

The report is publivly available. 8 of the girls on the PRIVATE chat said nothing. 2 said barely anything and worst thing the other 2 who did said was that black girls get into provincial sports teams or medcine at univ eazier than white kids.

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:35 AM

There's nothing racist about white kids calling out the racism and racist double standards of racist blacks.

Martin Neethling Aug 3, 2024, 07:01 AM

Another massive Fail on DM’s part. Both here and in the earlier reporting on this, only talking about the black girls and their parents said or felt. Nothing about these white girls, even in the face of the conclusion that they have been falsely accused. No effort at balanced reporting at all.

Con Tester Aug 3, 2024, 10:18 AM

There's no such thing as "balanced reporting." It's a comforting fable that journalists and editors tell themselves to assuage twinges of conscience. E.g., they often think that offsetting the views of a crackpot with those of a single expert counts as "balanced" with no mention of the consensus.

Con Tester Aug 3, 2024, 10:18 AM

Karl Sittlinger Aug 3, 2024, 07:02 AM

Anyone else find it concerning that the Gauteng education department is ‘disappointed’ 12 Pretoria High School are not racist? Shouldn't they be neutral and purely evaluate facts rather than lead a gleeful witch hunt to ruin the lives of 12 kids unnecessarily?

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 07:26 AM

Absolutely, I commented on this earlier. And I find it more disturbing that DM take down the comments section on the previous article, because they didn't like the questions and comments it raised. Freedom of speech perhaps not appreciated by the author with the flashback of a sensationalist piece.

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 07:10 AM

Its quite legal to have blacks only societies in SA and all over the world. Whites don't generally give a fig. Nobody call this racist. It never makes the news. National association of black journalists in USA for example. Why does this even exist. Here in South Africa we have many examples.

Trenton Carr Aug 3, 2024, 07:38 AM

Is it racist to coment on double standards?

Gerrie Pretorius Aug 3, 2024, 10:27 AM

Apparently yes, if you are white …

Laurence Erasmus Aug 3, 2024, 07:50 AM

DM your reporting on this matter falls far short of professional journalistic integrity and in the process you are not assisting society to build healthy non-racial relations. Shame on you!

David van der Walt Aug 3, 2024, 08:20 AM

Agreed 100% - I support DM because the quality of their investigative journalism is generally far higher than this. Checking out whether it doesn't make more sense to rather move my sub directly to AmaBhungane...

christoptg Aug 5, 2024, 08:47 AM

There was no journalism here.. just reporting.

bmtait Aug 3, 2024, 08:19 AM

This article is very one sided like all the rest of the press coverage of this issue. I’m very disappointed that the DM hasn’t tried to cover this issue in a balanced fashion. What actually happened? Why were the girls found not guilty? None of this appears to matter in the media show trials.

Dave Jacobs Aug 3, 2024, 08:37 AM

Bravo, Daily Maverick! Yet another masterclass in the art of selective storytelling. It's truly impressive how you've managed to distill complex issues into such a refreshingly one-sided narrative. The subtlety with which you wield your editorial control to champion the cause of race baiting is nothing short of genius. Who needs balanced journalism when we can indulge in such finely crafted bias? Keep up the stellar work!

Malusi Ndungane Aug 3, 2024, 10:59 AM

Excellent. As Oscar Wilde said: "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of intelligence."

Katryn dK Aug 3, 2024, 04:02 PM

Sergei Rostov Aug 3, 2024, 08:40 AM

For some balance read Richard Wilkinson on Politicsweb for what actually happened.

Cachunk Aug 3, 2024, 09:07 AM

Completely agree. Mr Wilkinson (in BizNews) lays bare the absolutely scandalous treatment of these innocent young girls and the mainstream media, disappointingly including DM, have been duplicitous!

megapode Aug 4, 2024, 01:10 PM

Wilkinson was the eminence grise in this matter, arranging pro-bono representation by advocates for the 12 accused. His is not an impartial voice.

Middle aged Mike Aug 4, 2024, 02:47 PM

Who would you say is an 'an impartial voice' in this matter? Being partial doesn't make you wrong and neither does getting involved to assists in righting what you regard as an injustice.

megapode Aug 5, 2024, 08:54 AM

The voices most likely to report on what is known and verifiable are the media. Wilkinson has a long string of reports, fuelled by the obsession and blind spot (that he shares with Zille) with "wokeness", based on the unverifiable. He certainly is not an impartial reporter, he is an actor.

Middle aged Mike Aug 5, 2024, 09:27 AM

That's a non-answer if ever there was one.

Karl Sittlinger Aug 5, 2024, 12:18 PM

I would argue, based on the quality of this article and the one before by Nonkululeko Njilo, that they are much more biased and one sided than the ones from biznews. Is there something factually incorrect in his article, or do you just not like what he writes? Impartiality isn't a sin per se.

Charlie Victor Aug 3, 2024, 08:47 AM

Hmmm, 12 girls cleared and the Gestapo "upset". Ok, publish said Whatsapps. Let's all see how this miscarriage of justice occurred. I'd hedge a bet the reason it's not published is because there's nothing in it and merely a deflection from the real issue of the girl who still remains suspended.

Sergei Rostov Aug 3, 2024, 08:53 AM

Entitled "Another noxious race hoax".

Malcolm McManus Aug 3, 2024, 09:02 AM

It would be nice and very refreshing to see all "ALL" the people who demonstrated and held up anti racist posters, do the same again, with "Were Sorry " posters for naturally assuming racism took place. Each and every one of them jumped to the wrong conclusion. Makes them knee jerk racists.

A Rosebank Ratepayer Aug 3, 2024, 11:30 AM

It seems that in the face of their failure to address the real issues facing education in this country such as the deplorable, embarrassing and disempowering numeracy and literacy rates, the Gauteng Dept of Ed is resorting to race baiting and the DM to click bait journalism - shame on both of you.

Maj.kno Aug 3, 2024, 12:17 PM

Thus is what I said all along, a set-up by extremely jealous black pupils ad the only way to get attention is to cry "racists" now I sincerely hope to see 13 lawsuits against all the accusers, the education dept, and the media, 12 for the girls, and one for the falsely accused Head of the school.

Maj.kno Aug 3, 2024, 12:20 PM

Further, a public retraction and humble apology to EVERYONE falsly accused by the media including you, DM, and the hysteria that you caused around these girls and their Headmistress. Shame on you.

Annika Larsson Aug 3, 2024, 12:30 PM

This tendentious little piece of smear journalism will live on in well-deserved ignominy. That it got past the editor is a travesty all of its own, but the blind, prurient, relentless need to thought-police and to politicise what is ultimately a private matter among individuals, is disgraceful.

tshiggo Aug 3, 2024, 01:17 PM

Not surprised that the racist ANC government is disappointed that there's no evidence of white on black racism... doesn't suit their narrative when society don't follow their racist lead

Malusi Ndungane Aug 3, 2024, 01:21 PM

The whole media presented this story as an open and shut case of racism. No journalism at all. But that's the press and TV these days, push the narrative and shut down questions. And these are the people who want to censor social media to stop 'misinformation' and 'hate'.

Ritey roo roo Aug 4, 2024, 03:11 PM

Good. Rule of law prevailed.

Gareth Murray Aug 4, 2024, 10:09 AM

Why is the principal still suspended? It's shocking that pupils were suspended for alleged connotations & 'micro-aggressions'.Micro aggressions aren't even a thing, people need to step back & calm down before baying for suspensions & school closures & losing all sense of reality.

Donald Knight Aug 4, 2024, 11:39 AM

Wtf are 'micro-aggressions'? Did someone point a pencil at someone else...or what?

They're small things, but appear to be dished out on the basis of race. Never overtly racist, but you might reasonably wonder if a person of the same colour would get the same treatment. EG you open the door for white ladies but not for black ladies (I'm old fashioned).

Karl Sittlinger Aug 5, 2024, 11:43 AM

Bob, there are quite a few feminists that regard opening doors for women (of any race) as sexist and misogynistic. If someone were to call you a misogynist purely based on that, would you just simply agree? Would you not discuss it private with friends? This is what witch hunt is now happening @ PGHS

How can they, except when they presumed the girls to have been guilty, be "disappointed"?

j.a.g.zilverbe Aug 4, 2024, 12:21 PM

To me, this sounds like the Gauteng Department of Education is disappointed that a so-called racial issue was not a racial issue to begin with, which would imply that the Gauteng Department of Education is not as neutral as they would portray themselves to be. White pupils found to have been racist = burn them at the stakes. White pupils not found to have been racist = disappointment. How on earth is a country supposed to move past and move forward, when the very departments that help shape young minds seems to be perpetuating racist behaviour and views by their actions and utterances? I wonder if, had the colour band have been applied in reverse, if as much noise would have been made...

The South African Human Rights Commission is investigating both incidents. Let us wait for that report which we pray will be unbiased and fair.

This is not the place for slap stick comedy.

megapode Aug 4, 2024, 01:16 PM

This is a piece of clickbait. What the Department seems to be upset about is the process and the lack of reporting. There's nothing quoted here which says that they are disappointed with the outcome.

Rod MacLeod Aug 4, 2024, 02:30 PM

"The Gauteng department of education has expressed disappointment at the outcome of a disciplinary hearing at Pretoria High School for Girls ". What part of '... disappointment with the outcome of a disciplinary hearing ... ' did you miss in the first paragraph of the article?

megapode Aug 5, 2024, 09:03 AM

That's in the report, but it isn't a quote from the GDE. Look for a quote from the GDE that says they are unhappy with the outcome. Did you find it? This trashes an assertion I made elsewhere that the media would be the most reliable, impartial voice. I'm going to wallow in disillusionment.

I'm extremely grateful that my daughter is done with schooling. Casual racism directed at white kids in and out of the classroom has been tolerated if not even encouraged for most of her school career. She has spent that at expensive private schools where few if any people beyond the small number of bursary recipients have ever experienced anything approximating 'previous disadvantage'. Things that she's reported having said in her presence would probably warrant suspensions and reams of journalistic output if the word 'white' was substituted with 'black' and the speaker was white rather than black.

The rush to judgement with this affair has been shocking from the press and education officials alike. I haven't seen one article on the young black girl and her toxic videos about Whites on Twitter (X). If it is mentioned at all it's as an aside and almost as if it doesn't matter. Hardly anyone has mentioned that she was suspended too. And the schoolgirls in full uniform chanting the jolly old "kill the boer" along with the EFF in front of the school. That's OK is it.

William Stucke Aug 4, 2024, 09:32 PM

DM: With this descent into the gutter press and totally one sided "journalism", I will not renew my subscription. Add to that suddenly putting me on your "naughty list" because I ragged someone about writing all in capitals. Your reintroduction of the 300-char limit, while allowing some more. Why?

William Stucke Aug 4, 2024, 09:34 PM

Ah yes. And your links to articles when moderating comments are a good innovation - but still broken. Drop everything including "?dm_source= . . ."

This was a racist witch hunt by black racists just like the all black clicks advertising team who fabricated a fake hate crime with the help of the EFF. They have done the same here. We want to hear from the white kids, we want those white kids to lay charges of crime injuria against the department

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 07:29 AM

DUE THE DEPARTMENT FOR RACISM AND LAY CHARGES OF CRIME INJURIA

christo o Aug 5, 2024, 11:03 AM

Oh no, I must be in the wrong place? This feels like an opinion piece, not a reporting piece? Come on DM, if you are not going to come with facts then I can no longer trust you. I am especially curious about the factual links between this and the Western Cape Pinelands High School.

chucklebear Aug 5, 2024, 12:05 PM

The white students and the white headmistress must sue the department of education, the black students, the EFF, the various news outlets who fasley pushed this narrative. GP DoE said even when there is no evidence of racism they must still find the white girls guilty. This is human rights atrocity
