DA set to retain Western Cape, rising well above 50% vote - with PA in third place

With 70% of Western Cape votes captured and counted, the governing Democratic Alliance has crossed the 50% majority and is set to secure a fourth straight victory. But who joins them in opposition benches is another fight.
DA set to retain Western Cape, rising well above 50% vote - with PA in third place Alan Winde is set for another term as Western Cape premier, as by Friday 31 May, his party the Democratic Alliance has reached a majority in the province. Speaking to Daily Maverick on Friday, DA Western Cape leader Tertuis Simmers said the party was “humbled by the massive response from the electorate across the Western Cape”. By 10:59 am on Friday, 1,089 of 1,572 voting districts had been completed in the province. So far, the party has a 54.63% majority — with key districts such as Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain to be captured.
Simmers described the campaign as “interesting” with just under 29% of the votes still to come in. The party has already reached a majority but now Simmers said the next goal was to surpass the 2019 results — which stood at 55.45%. At various points during the campaign trail, it was suggested the DA would lose its majority in the province, due to several issues including the party’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war and the rise of the Patriotic Alliance. He said the party took a constructive and positive approach. “We came with solutions, we could portray a government already in action, changing people’s lives, outlining what we will do for the next five years,” said the provincial leader. Race for next places

In the 2019 general elections, the provincial opposition parties in the legislature were the African National Congress (ANC), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Good, African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and Al Jama-ah. During the counting and capturing, the ANC is still in second place with 18.83% of the vote. Yesterday, ANC provincial spokesperson Muhammad Khalid Sayed told Daily Maverick it was too early to confirm results, especially in key places such as Khayelitsha, one of the ANC's traditional support bases in the Cape metro. The Patriotic Alliance — who have been in a back and forth tit-for-tat with the DA throughout the campaign — is currently placed third. The EFF is currently ranked fourth with 4.49%, followed by the National Coloured Congress (NCC) at 2.74% in fifth. The FF+ is next with 1.64%. Al Jama-ah is ranked seventh at 1.42%, with the ACDP and Good trailing behind them. With these current results, the provincial legislature is going to be shaken up by the appearance of both the PA and the NCC. “But I must say I’m actually looking forward to the seventh term,” said Simmers, who added, “I think it will be the most diverse group of political parties within the chambers”. He did caution about some of the parties who were campaigning along race or ethnic-based politics. “The reality is that’s not the way that governance works… you must adapt and you must implement policies for all the people,” said Simmers, who added: “and it’s either you are a constructive opposition party which some of them will struggle with”. Having felons leading your party is a winning strategy in SA. Witness the success of the PA and MK parties. SA's voters just love dat criminal thang.....

Glyn Morgan May 31, 2024, 01:44 PM

Viva DA!

Sydney Kaye May 31, 2024, 02:41 PM

Disgraceful to see the representative of Al Jamha being interviews in full Hamas regalia including headband. But also reassuring that out of 550000 Muslims in SA the Israel/Jew hate vote was negligible.

Yaakov Rashi May 31, 2024, 03:08 PM

The ANC underestimated Muslims and treated them like pawns. People saw through it and chose to protect their home.

User May 31, 2024, 04:34 PM

I think that's great Yaakov! I understand global sympathies and their necessity, but how will Hamas get the potholes fixed and clean running water in the taps?

Rama Chandra Jun 1, 2024, 10:30 AM

Absolutely shocking that someone who hates Arabs as much as you do is allowed to comment in Daily Maverick. You know full well that there was no "Hamas regalia", but he was simply wearing Palestinian solidarity clothing. To conflate Hamas and Palestinians is horrifically racist. I am shocked DM allows the perpetuation of that kind of racist language.

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jun 1, 2024, 11:31 AM

No one is innocent in this conflict. We all need to be honest with ourselves. Self honesty is the only base on which constructive outcomes can be reached.

jill jones Jun 1, 2024, 05:17 PM

The problem is people are allowed to have an opinion and, in Saffieland at least, allowed to voice it. One may not agree with it, and you are allowed to say so, but you ought not to order that he/she cannot voice their opinion as freely as you -- at least in an open medium such as the DM is.

Shirley Gobey May 31, 2024, 03:04 PM

Well done DA. Sanity prevailed in the WC. May you go from strength to strength.

Belinda Cavero Jun 1, 2024, 05:03 PM

I, sitting in another province, am envious. Well done DA.

Kenneth FAKUDE Jun 2, 2024, 02:12 PM

The DA could have done much better if MK did not capture the fed up voters, MK will reconcile them with the ANC again, ANC/MK has been one thing for decades, what is new?

Yaakov Rashi May 31, 2024, 03:06 PM

PA and ACDP is an alliance made in heaven. If they can shore up some other parties maybe they have a chance. What’s good about an ANC opposition is it’ll pressure DA to deliver even more

Arnold O Managra May 31, 2024, 03:37 PM

Btw the abbreviation for the National Coloured Congress is CCC, not NCC. This made me chuckle looking at the ballot. Someone clearly realised that the original name severely limited nation-wide appeal.

Rae Earl May 31, 2024, 04:28 PM

This is a much needed outcome for SA as a whole. The Western Cape can now continue its demonstration of what happens when good governance based on solid capitalistic ideals and business acumen is capable of as opposed to the communistic and socialist actions of the ANC and EFF and soon to be continued by the MKP in KZN. It goes without saying that KZN is now truly doomed having fallen into the hands of a master looter and appointer of hopelessly unqualified cadres and comrades to critical posts. Tourism will now move even more heavily away from KZN in the direction of the Western Cape.

Steve Davidson Jun 1, 2024, 07:07 AM

Ah, but their 'king' (not Zuma BTW) will continue to own the land along with their 'traditional leaders' and they can stay rooted back in the 18th century. Bless.

chantal.s.valentine Jun 1, 2024, 03:00 PM

You say that as though that hasn’t been the case in KZN already for at least a decade. Not sure how much worse it can get.

cliff73 May 31, 2024, 05:19 PM

I think a DA under Geordin Hill-Lewis would have pulled 10% off other parties.

Geoff Coles May 31, 2024, 10:03 PM

He's not my favourite but seemingly doing a good job

kurt_cron Jun 1, 2024, 07:17 AM

Geoff Coles, can you kindly share why Hill-Lewis is not your favourite. I'm interested in knowing.

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jun 1, 2024, 11:33 AM

The only plausible reason can be ignorance.

Kenneth FAKUDE Jun 2, 2024, 04:12 PM

We should be in the business of making hard working politicians our favourite, view that as their personality

chantal.s.valentine May 31, 2024, 06:38 PM

ANC tactics backfired. Loud voices on the streets waving flags, but apparently many of the voters were ultimately uncomfortable with the party hosting Hamas terrorists and kowtowing to Putin/Russian naval exercises etc. Gave them no advantage either in the w cape or nationally

Arnold O Managra May 31, 2024, 07:33 PM

The WC and NC continue to see the strong emergence of coloured identity parties, notably the PA but also the CCC et al. This is not necessarily a bad thing, although it is still a reflection of the strong influence of skin colour or even culture on SA politics. In the long term this is not going to work out well. Perhaps the DM would like to curb its regular race-baiting or racial identity enforcing articles? We all need to do our bit.

Kevan O'Donnell May 31, 2024, 11:57 PM

Coloured identity politics is a very good thing. One needs to look after oneself, since nobody else is doing it for them. (And I am not of that group but have empathy with their neglect)

kurt_cron Jun 1, 2024, 07:20 AM

Kevin O'Donnell, I am a coloured and I can tell you that our commuties are not neglected.

Dave Black Jun 1, 2024, 08:48 AM

That is good to hear Kurt. The Western Cape gives us hope. Like the Springboks, you've used diversity as your strength. Good governance and unity is all that matters, not skin colour. Stronger together. Well done WC!!

jeromesdavie May 31, 2024, 09:02 PM

Well done DA you've got my vote. No need for corruption here.

Geoff Coles May 31, 2024, 09:58 PM

The good party, the DA, triumphed over the Good Party.

Kevan O'Donnell May 31, 2024, 11:44 PM

Well done DA but unless we see some darker hues at leadership level and the disappearance of a certain woman, your future may be misty.

elize goussard Jun 1, 2024, 01:37 AM

agree fully

kurt_cron Jun 1, 2024, 07:27 AM

Kevin O'Donelle, even in the midst of challenges that diversity in Western Cape brings, the DA was still victorious. Our country will function like it should if we stop seeing colour. As long as our leaders are compitent to fulfil their respective roles why should colour matter.

Marco Savio Jun 1, 2024, 09:41 AM

Well said! Love the coloured constituents, its the soul of the WC, lets hope the DA continue to gain strength and all residents of the province experience lifestyle improvement. Spend the money where it is really needed and everyone benefits.

Jeromeadamdavis Jun 1, 2024, 10:14 AM

Agreed. This is a glaring problem that surely can't be difficult to solve? Feels like low hanging fruit to me...

Patterson Alan John Jun 1, 2024, 03:22 AM

The allocation of monies to the needs of the poor, is to be applauded. Uplifting the living standards of the poor is overdue and once they have improved accommodation, services and infrastructure, their view of the future will improve and give hope, which will, in turn, encourage education and skills gains. These skill gains can be started during the construction of the homes, etc., with on-the-job training to provide people with the skills, experience and ability to gain ongoing employment during the course of the 10-year plan, and beyond. I wish everyone every success as they embark on this initiative.

Beyond Fedup Jun 1, 2024, 04:58 AM

Well done DA???. This is the only province that functions and delivers on its mandate. We kept the looters, thieves, criminals and parasites at bay with their rapacious and grubby hands away from the cookie jar.

Fanie Rajesh Ngabiso Jun 1, 2024, 11:26 AM

Well done DA, and very well deserved. Looking at the results the tragedy is that so many remain wilfully blind to the real benefits you bring all of us, regardless of our colour or creed. If we were able to drop the tired out dated stereotypes, all of us honest people would be blue people. Viva DA. Viva South Africans.

Campbell Tyler Jun 1, 2024, 01:54 PM

Indeed, well done DA in the Cape, by hanging on to your majority against concerted opposition. But nationally? Have a look at these comparisons with DA results in 2019. Here is the % by which the DA vote grew or dropped (negative) by province and overall. National 0.9% Eastern Cape -1.4% Free State 4.3% Gauteng 0.3% KZN -0.5% Limpopo 0.6% Mpumalanga 1.7% Northern Cape -4.3% North West 1.6% Western Cape -0.2% In an election cycle where your main opponent, through its performance, basically gave you the country on a platter, and where its vote dropped by 17% nationally, these figures are pathetic. Where is the growth? Where is the possibility of being a viable alternative? I am sure Cyril must be thinking about his future, but I hope that many in the DA are thinking about John Steenhuisen’s position, and probably Helen’s too. Their sell by date is looming, even well past. The DA needs a new leadership face and new ideas - not even Alan or Giordon will do, leave them where they are doing such a good job anyway. Yes, the DA faced tough opposition, from the PA and MK, but there will always be tough opposition, you just have to up your game.

M P Jun 2, 2024, 07:06 AM

I always make a point to read the comments section on DM - maybe the political parties should do so too! Gives an indication of how the people really feel. A few people have alluded to this already but Helen "GodZille" needs to go and John isn't the one to lead the DA. I like what Geordin is doing - maybe him? I'm a 35 y.o white male in JHB who voted DA (more because of "well, who else?" then a strong alignment with their policies and leadership). They need to right people at the top to lead the DA! As for the 22% - that's really the upper threshold for the DA it seems. There are just citizizens who will never vote for them, in their current form, no.matter how badly the ANC fails. Hopefully a ANC/DA coalition that works. Anything else is a disaster and would see more semi-gration yo the Cape or immigration to UK/Canada/Aus.

nomondemeri Jun 2, 2024, 10:38 AM

Its been 30 years trying to change South Africa , but instead we are becoming the poorer of the poorest . But thanks to DA that we still have jobs and roofs over our heads . DA DA DA may you continue getting stronger and stronger in all provinces and resque our Country
