Zapiro’s one-sided cartoon on Israel conjures up deeper prejudice and division

It is with great sadness that I write to you today on behalf of the Western Cape Jewish community, many of whom have been deeply offended by the Zapiro cartoon you published titled ‘Proudly Made in Israel’ dated 15 May 2021. The cartoon is deeply biased and one-sided, making inflammatory and false accusations against Israel.
Zapiro’s one-sided cartoon on Israel conjures up deeper prejudice and division

Indeed, everyone has the right to freedom of expression, including freedom of artistic creativity. The caveat being, inter alia, that it neither extends to propaganda for war nor incite imminent violence. Given the worrying escalation in antisemitism abroad, which is directly linked to the conflict in the Middle East and has led to verbal and physical attacks on Jewish people and businesses, this cartoon closely resembles anti-Semitic propaganda.

The cartoon is deeply biased and one-sided, making inflammatory and false accusations against Israel.

Indeed, it was suggested by some parties that the current conflict was in response to the impending decision of the Israeli Supreme Court on a property right dispute, where the parties happened to be a Jewish landlord and a Palestinian tenant. Indeed, there has been a myriad civilian bombings, executed by both Palestinian and Israeli defence forces. Indeed, there has been a long and heated dispute over the land, with no state, international forum or government able to bring peace to the Middle East. However, your cartoon falsely and disproportionately apportions all blame for this conflict on Israel, denying any wrongdoing from the Palestinian side and denying the ancestral and religious ties of Jews, Christians and Arabs alike to the land.

When conflict heightens between Israel and Palestine, global Jewry falls victim to verbal and physical attacks in the name of “human rights”. The anger and hate directed at Israel spill over into antisemitism in the form of hate speech, intimidation and sometimes assault against Jewish people. The same can be said for South African Jewry, where over the last two weeks, members of our community have been harassed online and are fearful of potential threats to their wellbeing.

It is cartoons like this, at a time like this, that divide society. A society that is still grappling with its own young democracy, and that could instead band together to aid in the negotiation process for a peaceful co-existence in the Middle East.

We recognise the important role the media play. We ask that, in future, you engage more with the content you intend to comment on and consider both the Israeli and Palestinian views. This is something we are able to assist with.

If we truly want a society and world where all are treated equally, with dignity, respect and humanity, then we must collectively stand up against intolerance and discrimination. Antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, are equally deplorable and we ask that you keep this in mind. DM

The cartoon is revolting. Shame on Zapiro and DM for publishing it.

William Stucke Jun 2, 2021, 08:36 PM

I really don't understand the ongoing support for the Palestinians, especially in South Africa. These are people who have denied the right of the state of Israel to exist, and have vowed to kill every single Israeli. They are cowards who hide behind their own people, while launching thousands of rockets against Israeli civilians. Israel may not always succeed, but they try hard to avoid Palestinian civilians. Hamas, meanwhile, has their headquarters in a residential area! There can never be peace until the Palestinians acknowledge the right of Jewish people to live in the land of their ancestors and cease the mindless violence against Israel.

Rob Dyer Jun 2, 2021, 09:18 PM

William, you have hit the nail on the head. The Palestinians have given up their right to live anywhere near the state of Israel.

Gavin Hillyard Nov 4, 2024, 11:40 AM

Rubbish. They have a right to live there. Where they went wrong is to vote Hamas into power. They are now suffering the consequences.

A cartoon is supposed to be controversial and supposed to elicit a response. Someone is always going to be uncomfortable. There are some in denial of the truth depending on whom you are speaking to and what questions are being asked. I a not Jewish, Muslim, Christian nor Hindu for that matter and thought the cartoon was as always - brilliant. Some will be unable to take the heat.

Charles Parr Jun 2, 2021, 09:01 PM

Agreed, accept it for what it is. It's there to make one think not take sides.

Kanu Sukha Jun 5, 2021, 05:58 PM

Just a note of agreement ! Just because I come from a Hindu background, doth not make me a Modhi or BJP supporter ! The challenge is the inability to distinguish between a country, its people, and its political leadership. There is 'bias' in everything we say and do as human beings.

Sheila Vrahimis Nov 12, 2024, 01:19 PM

that controversial?

Lionel Krause Jun 2, 2021, 09:50 PM

It has been many years since I've seen a Zapiro cartoon on the Middle East. I imagine he has bit his tongue as many (some?) other of us South African Jews have, as Israel inexorably slips into becoming an Apartheid state, accelerated by the awful Nation State Bill. I am sure drawing that cartoon gave him no pleasure. Anti Semitism is despicable, and those practicing it are as vile as any other abusers of human rights. But to try and blame Zapiro - whose cartoons, for decades, have fearlessly shone the light on injustice, dishonesty, hypocrisy and all forms of racism - for fanning Anti Semitism, is disingenuous, a cowardly low blow. May he long continue the good fight against all injustice as he sees it, no fear or favour.

Kanu Sukha Jun 5, 2021, 05:59 PM

Well said !

Enver Klein Nov 4, 2024, 12:14 PM

Agreed

Stephen Paul Nov 18, 2024, 02:58 PM

I see nothing disingenuous in this article calling for antisemitism to be regarded as all other form of bigotry and discrimination, and which contradicts your appeal to fight against all injustice, no fear or favor. Zapiro cartoons ascerbic satire on the Jewish state mostly lack this standard.

Donald Glass Nov 4, 2024, 10:35 AM

It saddens me that - if anything - the cartoons drawn by Zapiro and published by DM have become even more anti-Semitic and biased in favour of those who seek the annihilation of Israel and the Jews. I really enjoy DM and I applaud Zapiro - but I'm sad.

cremdelacrem c Nov 4, 2024, 12:24 PM

Well put Donald! I too am extremely saddened by this Zapiro cartoon?

dexmoodl Nov 18, 2024, 02:22 PM

lol..pushing the new meaning of anti-semitism ( anti-zionism) the old anti-semitism is flourishing on right media and by politicians , but is condoned by Jewish organisations even ADL.

Gavin Hillyard Nov 4, 2024, 11:38 AM

For someone as brilliant as Zapiro to have such a closed mind when it comes to Israel is truly astonishing. I join other readers in condemning him for the distasteful and inaccurate cartoon, Shame on you DM for publishing such a divisive offering.

magwazam Nov 4, 2024, 11:43 AM

This letter is weak sauce. It doesn't even rebut the claim of ethnic cleansing; it just complains that people might become anti-Semitic if he points it out. Israel is not synonymous with Jewish identity, and it's OK to criticize Israel.

Peter Geddes Nov 4, 2024, 12:06 PM

I applaud Zapiro’s courage in bringing rare and urgently needed attention to what is being done in the name of Israel, and which will tarnish the name of Jewry for at least another century.

Mark J Nov 9, 2024, 06:21 AM

I am appalled by the insinuation that the W Cape Jewish community is of a singular political mindset - as if we are all asses braying at the altar of Zionism. Like many free-thinking Jews in the W Cape, I stand for the freedom of Palestine from the tyranny of the ethnosupremacist state of Israel.

Mohamed Ebrahim Nov 12, 2024, 12:07 PM

"It is not the eyes that are blind, but rather the heart (Quran 22:46) [translation paraphrased]. Meaning "it is not physical blindness that prevents a person from seeing the truth, but rather a lack of understanding or a closed mind. The veil is being lifted & Israel as we know it, will fall.

chr Nov 17, 2024, 02:56 PM

Actually, that heart blindness, "lack of understanding" and "closed mind" to which you refer can be used to malign either side in the conflict. In this case the hat is a perfect fit for Hamas. Since it fits so well wear it.

Sheila Vrahimis Nov 12, 2024, 01:35 PM

one sided reporting irks me. adhering to popular narrative. israel is bad bad bad. palestine played no role whatsoever, ever, in perpetrating conflict. there are two sides to this story. a slap on the wrist of hamas, cause of this terrible war. cause of the killing of children and civilians

Sheila Vrahimis Nov 12, 2024, 01:45 PM

following up on my previous comment, hamas did not provide for shelter for civilians when they built their vast network of tunnels in planning oct 7, why is this not questioned? if they cared for children and innocents that would have been provided. were they dumb or malicious?

regalh Nov 12, 2024, 02:14 PM

Like all terrorist the depend on bullet proof jackets made out of civilian flesh. Shoot from the crowd and flee out the back to avoid getting caught in retaliation.

Sheila Vrahimis Nov 12, 2024, 05:08 PM

NOWHERE IN THE MEDIA HAVE I SEEN THIS QUESTION ASKED. not here or internationally. is this because of bias? i want to know why hamas furthers the exposure of innocent children and civilians to genocide. why has nobody questioned hamas. am i alone in asking this? DM how about providing an answer?

Gavin Hillyard Nov 17, 2024, 08:38 PM

Hamas is exposing children and civilians to danger not genocide. Genocide is defined as” The deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group. Israel’s fight is with Hamas, not Palestinian civilians.

Lawrence King Nov 12, 2024, 02:22 PM

Everyone defending the cartoonist right to attack Israel in the name of free speech ... sadly no such luck for the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists gunned down in 2015 for daring to print a satirical cartoon of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Oh, how the shocking double standards do abound!!!

Sheila Vrahimis Nov 12, 2024, 04:50 PM

you are sadly right. but then israel will NEVER SINK SO LOW

montebe montebe Nov 12, 2024, 05:26 PM

Simply recognize Israel’s right to exist in peace. Surely the world can identify with the need to exist particularly in your historical homeland. We all postulate about our right to exist and yet look the other way when a tiny nation of a handful of people asks for the same. PS I am not Jewish

dexmoodl Nov 18, 2024, 01:27 PM

the word is hstorical . if that the case , the US , should give all the tribes the own nation. and all can return to Europe, Asia ..since all that are left of them after the genocide by British and US army is a handful.

District Six Nov 15, 2024, 07:47 AM

Criticising Israeli zionism is not antisemitism. Criticizing the Israeli state for bombing children in a hospital is not antisemitism. That's gaslighting. Palestinians also have a right to exist, to lands, to home, and fields and life.

Steve Davidson Nov 16, 2024, 02:05 PM

Any reason for printing this after 3 years, or did the Zionist lobby want some publicity to cover up what's going on over there in the Levant?

Enver Klein Nov 18, 2024, 01:35 PM

Well said, Steve, and to quote Amos Goldberg, Professor of Genocide Studies at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem "Yes, it is genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion. Jewish history will henceforth be stained". Genocide versus a cartoon???

dexmoodl Nov 18, 2024, 02:17 PM

Think is trying to show a united front , as a result of wavering in diaspora Jews, some are the questioning the narrative they were fed for 75 years ( the so called bad Jews). Hannah Arendt predicted this , her views on Israel only now being reconised

Peter Geddes Nov 18, 2024, 02:32 PM

Why is this article from 2021 continually being repeated? I’m confused because there was another cartoon on this conflict much more recently.

geo Nov 20, 2024, 12:12 PM

Zionism is giving Judasism a bad name. They are not the same. Without realising it, Zapiro predicted current events. As a Jew, I am ashamed of what the government of Israel has been doing for the last 13 months. Instead of protecting Jews from anti-semitism, Israel now causes it.

Steve Davidson Nov 25, 2024, 02:09 PM

Could someone please enlighten me as to why this over 3-year old article is being resurrected now?? Or are we being exposed to more whinging, trying to cover up the disgraceful genocide in Gaza?

Louella Humphrey Nov 27, 2024, 02:46 PM

An old article, but the usual antisemitism rhetoric that continues unabated. Appalling.

Gordon Holtmann Dec 3, 2024, 11:16 AM

It is sad that every criticism of Israel's war (some would say genocide) on Palestine gives rise to cries of anti-semitism from the Jewish diaspora. 'Destroying Hamas' (Netanyahu's words) has involved the violent deaths of thousands of innocent Palestinian women and children. Shame on Israel.
